About Us
The formation of the Virginia Harp Center was a result of the perfect merger of a businessman and a professional harpist.
For 20 years, David D'Arville was the owner of Southern Music Center, a successful Richmond-based music store. Mary Jane D'Arville graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a Masters of Music in Harp Performance. A harpist in both Richmond and Charlottesville Symphony Orchestras, she has over 20 years of free-lancing and teaching experience at all levels. Their marriage in January 1996, brought them together in realizing many dreams, including the fruition of The Virginia Harp Center.

Add my name to your undoubtedly long list of happy clients! In April, I began exploring the harp as an addition to our small hammered dulcimer group, with a Harpsicle in mind (mostly because it was inexpensive and portable). I wasn't even sure I could play a harp--but Daniel and Diana at your Haddonfield store patiently introduced me to the instrument and I soon began lessons with Kathy DeAngelo. With each visit to their store, Daniel and Diana always gave me great guidance and truly understood the process of finding the right harp for my needs and budget. In July, a 2003 Aziliz was consigned; and after several tryouts I took the plunge! Having my own instrument vs a rental has helped me greatly--I practice more often and take it places to play (I would have been horrified had I damaged a rental--even slightly--so I was overly cautious). And yes, mine came with a few minor nicks-- so that's another worry off my plate. But thanks to Daniel and Diana, I got an affordable, quality harp that I will enjoy, treasure and be proud of for years to come. I appreciate all their efforts, and especially their patience, in making this dream a reality.

Dear Virginia Harp Center and Mr. D'Arville, My name is Kelly Wells and I purchased a Lyon and Healy Style 23 from your store earlier this January. I would like to thank you for making my harp selecting experience so enjoyable. I really enjoyed speaking with your staff and gaining more knowledge from them at the Virginia store and personally at the Atlanta store. I could not be any happier with my harp, all thanks to the Virginia Harp Center!

Dear Virginia Harp Center, My name is Amy and I purchased a lovely Lyon and Healy 85P from you last year. I am a professional harpist and needed a smaller sized instrument to use as a gig harp. I wanted to write to you in way of thank you for your amazing service. This particular harp is lovely. Your manager assured me that it was one of the nicest student sized harps that she had played, and on receiving it, I am in complete agreement. It truly is lovely. It has a full rich sound that carries extremely well without the brassy or tinny overtones, even in the extreme treble range. It retains a tune for a long period of time, and holds up well to all of the gigging that I use it for. Thank you so much for your amazing service. I was nervous about buying an instrument sight unseen and without playing it first... I am wonderfully pleased. I will absolutely not hesitate in using you again for my future purchases, and in recommending you to my students!
Conveniently located outside of Philadelphia and Richmond, the Virginia Harp Center provides the Mid-Atlantic region with the largest selection of harps.
When the Virginia Harp Center opened in Midlothian, Virginia in 1997, we were determined to create a showroom dedicated to serving all harpists. We succeeded by offering the largest selection of harps on the East Coast by some of the finest lever and pedal harp makers in the world including Camac, Dusty Strings, Lyon & Healy, Salvi, and Triplett. But we didn’t stop there.
Our commitment to providing the highest quality customer service to harpists everywhere inspired us to open a second showroom location. Virginia Harp Center North in Haddonfield, New Jersey, offers the same extensive inventory selection as well as the knowledgeable, friendly and ever-helpful staff harpists have come to expect from our company. On the next pages you will read about the instruments, the makers and the companies that manufacture the harps we represent. It is our goal to help you find the harp that you’ve been looking for. Enjoy.
