UVB phototherapy involves shining ultraviolet light on the skin to treat psoriasis and other chronic skin conditions. It is an easier and safer alternative to PUVA treatment (psoralen plus UVA phototherapy). As its name suggests, the light that is used in narrow-band UVB phototherapy is a very specific range of wavelengths in the ultraviolet spectrum - just 311 to 312 nm - that has been shown to most effectively slow the rapid growth of cells and improve the symptoms of psoriasis. Patients generally receive phototherapy treatments three times per week for about 10 weeks. Exposure time begins at a few seconds and increases with each session. Session lengths are tailored to the patient's skin type and tolerance. After the skin has cleared, UVB phototherapy may be continued to prolong remission time, or patients may undergo other psoriasis treatments to minimize their exposure to ultraviolet light.
BLU-U Light Photodynamic Therapy
Simple, quick, safe and painless, BLU-U Light Photodynamic Therapy offers an attractive alternative to medications and antibiotics for young men and women with moderate acne. The BLU-U Light device shines gentle waves of narrow-band blue light on the skin, killing the bacteria that cause acne breakouts. BLU-U light treatments take only 15 minutes once or twice a week, and all patients have to do is sit comfortably beneath the light with a special pair of glasses to protect their eyes. Within a few weeks, BLU-U light can control or temporarily clear up acne breakouts.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face. The scalp, neck, ears, chest, back and/or eyes may also be affected. Symptoms range from red pimples, lines and visible blood vessels to dry or burning skin and a tendency to flush easily. Many people find that the emotional effects of rosacea - such as low self-confidence and avoidance of social situations - are more difficult to handle than the physical ones. Although it can affect anyone, rosacea typically appears in light-skinned, light-haired adults aged 30-50. It is not yet known what causes rosacea and the disease is not curable, although it can be treated with topical and oral medications, laser therapy or laser surgery.
Eczema
Eczema is a group of inflamed skin conditions that result in chronic itchy rashes. About 15 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of eczema, including 10-20 percent of all infants. Symptoms vary from person to person but often include dry, red, itchy patches on the skin which break out in rashes when scratched. Objects and conditions that trigger itchy eczema outbreaks may include rough or coarse materials touching the skin, excessive heat or sweating, soaps, detergents, disinfectants, fruit and meat juices, dust mites, animal saliva and danders, upper respiratory infections and stress. Treatment involves the restriction of scratching, use of moisturizing lotions or creams, cold compresses and nonprescription anti-inflammatory corticosteroid creams and ointments. If this proves insufficient, physicians may prescribe corticosteroid medication, antibiotics to combat infection, or sedative antihistamines. Phototherapy is a common procedure that uses light to reduce rashes. For severe cases, drugs such as cyclosporine A may be recommended.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a group of chronic skin disorders that cause itching and/or burning, scaling and crusting of the skin. Over seven million men and women in the U.S. of all ages have some form of psoriasis, which may be mild, moderate or severe. The most commonly affected areas are the scalp, elbows, knees, hands, feet and genitals. Psoriasis cannot be cured but it can be treated successfully, sometimes for months or years at a time and occasionally even permanently. Treatment depends on the type, severity and location of psoriasis; the patient’s age, medical history and life; and the effect the disease has on the patient’s general mental health. The most common treatments are topical medications, phototherapy, photochemotherapy (PUVA), and oral or injectable medication (for severe symptoms). Our knowledgeable and experienced staff can assist with prior-authorization, co-pay assistance for those who qualify and injection training. Biologics (Humira, Enbrel and Stelara) a group of injectable medications used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and psoratic arthritis.
Warts
Warts are skin growths caused by viruses. Different warts respond to different treatments. Some go away on their own. Salicylic acid products (in the form of drops, gels, pads and bandages) can help self-treatment of many warts by dissolving the keratin protein that makes up the wart and the dead skin above it. Others can be removed via liquid nitrogen freezing or electrical stimulation. Surgery may be recommended for painful or large warts that do not respond to these treatments.
Molluscum
Molluscum contagiosum is a chronic skin infection caused by a virus. It's quite common among children, and is usually spread by touching an affected area on a person infected with the virus. The virus can also be transmitted through sexual contact. Molluscum causes painless, raised papules or nodules on the skin that look like pink pearls. They appear most often on the face, neck, arms, hands and chest, although they may appear nearly anywhere on the body, including the groin. The growths are often indented in the center and have a firm, waxy core. Scratching can spread the infection, leading to lines or clusters of lesions on the skin. Patients with healthy immune systems generally find that molluscum contagiosum clears on its own within six to 18 months. Patients should try not to scratch the papules, or else they risk scarring and bacterial infection. If necessary, a dermatologist can remove individual lesions.
Actinic Keratoses
Actinic keratoses (AKs) are lesions on the surface layer of the skin (epidermis) caused by chronic exposure to sunlight, particularly ultraviolet light. AKs typically manifest as rough or scaly skin, bumps, mottled patterns and cutaneous horns. They may appear anywhere on the skin surface exposed to sunlight, but common areas include the face (including ears and lips), neck, arms and hands. Lesions range in size from a pinpoint to several centimeters in diameter and may be yellow, brown, red or violet, smooth, wrinkled or furrowed. Actinic keratoses can signal the onset of skin cancer; they can become squamous cell carcinomas, the second-most common form of epidermal skin cancer. Depending on a number of factors such as the size, location and severity of lesions, as well as the patient’s age, health, medical history, occupation, expectations and preferences, treatment for AKs may take the form of traditional surgical excision, cryosurgery (freezing), curettage (scraping), topical medications, laser treatment, chemical peels, dermabrasion and pulsed light therapy. Routine re-examinations every few months and limitation of exposure to direct sunlight are recommended.
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT), also known as photoradiation therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat skin cancer and other conditions such as acne, rosacea and actinic keratosis. PDT uses a topical photo sensitizer called Levulan along with a light energy source to destroy abnormal skin cells. The Levulan is applied to the skin and incubated for a certain amount of time before it is exposed to light energy to activate the medication and destroy the targeted cells. Most people see successful results from PDT after three treatment sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. This procedure can be combined with other treatments, such as intense pulsed light, in order to maximize results and leave skin as healthy and beautiful as possible.
Hair Loss
Hair loss can occur as a result of aging, heredity, medications or an underlying medical condition, and can affect men and women of all ages. It may leave you with pattern baldness, patchy spots or thinned hair. Most people are troubled by this undesired change to their appearance and may be frustrated that there is no cure available for this condition. While many people are forced to deal with hair loss and let the condition progress naturally, there are several treatments available to help promote hair growth or hide hair loss. The best treatment option for each patient depends on the location and extent of the hair loss, but may include hair growth medications, wigs and hairpieces, and hair transplant or scalp reduction surgery.
Nail Fungus
Nail fungal infections occur under the fingernail or toenail as a result of exposure to a warm, moist environment like sweaty shoes or shower floors. These fungal infections usually begin as a yellow or white spot under the nail, and develop into thickened, brittle and distorted nails. They may also turn your nails a darker color as a result of the debris building up. Nail fungal infections occur more frequently in toenails because they are more often confined to dark, moist environments. Nail fungal infections should be treated immediately, as they may cause permanent damage and are likely to recur. Treatment options include oral anti-fungal medications, anti-fungal nail polish or other topical medications. The nail may need to be removed in severe infections.
Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis involves an inflammation of the skin caused by contact with a foreign substance. Common triggers of contact dermatitis include poison ivy, certain foods, cleaning products, detergents, cosmetics and latex rubber. When a patient comes in contact with one of these triggers, he/she may experience a red rash, blistering, itchiness, dryness and more. Symptoms caused by contact dermatitis may be a result of an immune system reaction or from an external allergic reaction to the specific trigger. Most cases of contact dermatitis do not require treatment and will go away on their own within a few weeks. Patients can help relieve symptoms by avoiding the trigger, washing the affected area and applying hydrocortisone cream or taking oral antihistamines.
Acne
Acne is the term for the blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that can appear typically on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Seventeen million Americans currently have acne, making it the most common skin disease in the country. While it affects mostly teenagers, and almost all teenagers have some form of acne, adults of any age can have it. Acne is not life-threatening, but it can cause physical disfigurement (scarring) and emotional distress. Treatment for acne varies depending on the type and severity of lesions, as well as the patient's skin type, age and life. Options include:
Topical Medications
Antibiotics
Accutane
Blackhead Extraction
Microdermabrasion
Photodynamic Therapy
Skin Care
Laser Treatments
Blu-U Light Treatments
Simple, quick, safe and painless, BLU-U Light Photodynamic Therapy offers an attractive alternative to medications and antibiotics for young men and women with moderate acne. The BLU-U Light device shines gentle waves of narrow-band blue light on the skin, killing the bacteria that cause acne breakouts. BLU-U light treatments take only 15 minutes once or twice a week, and all patients have to do is sit comfortably beneath the light with a special pair of glasses to protect their eyes. Within a few weeks, BLU-U light can control or temporarily clear up acne breakouts. Acne scarring can be treated in a variety of ways as well. These include:
Chemical Peels
Dermabrasion/Microdermabrasion
Soft Tissue Fillers
Laser/Pulsed Light Treatments
Skin Cancer
Skin cancer refers to the abnormal, uncontrolled growth of skin cells. One in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Risk factors include pale skin, family history of melanoma, being over 40 years old, and regular sun exposure. Fortunately, skin cancer is almost always curable if detected and treated early. Skin cancers vary in shape, color, size and texture, so any new, changed or otherwise suspicious growths or rashes should be examined immediately by a physician. Early intervention is essential to preventing the cancer from spreading. The most common skin cancers are:
Basal cell carcinoma
80-85% of all skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma affects cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis.
Squamous cell carcinoma
10% of all skin cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma affects cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.
Melanoma
5% of all skin cancers. Melanoma is a rare but very dangerous type of skin cancer. It is the leading cause of death from skin disease.
Melasma
Melasma is a common skin condition where patches of skin on the face turn brown. The most commonly affected areas are the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead and upper lip. Melasma mostly affects women. Causes include exposure to ultraviolet light and hormonal changes resulting from pregnancy or birth control. Treatment by a dermatologist often improves the appearance of melasma and prevents future recurrence. Treatments for melasma include:
UVA/UVB Sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher
Sunblock Lotions
Avoidance of Any Irritating Cleansers, Creams or Makeup Products
Discontinuation of Birth Control
Bleaching Creams including Hydroquinone
Glycolic Acid Peels
Salicylic Acid Peels
Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is a rare condition that causes excessive sweating on the hands, feet, armpits, face and genital area, or all over the entire body. The cause of this condition is unknown, although it often runs in families and begins during childhood. Patients with hyperhidrosis may sweat all over their body or in certain areas. Their skin may become white and wrinkled or red and irritated as a result of the constant moisture, and may develop an odor as well. Living with hyperhidrosis often causes patients to feel embarrassed, awkward and self-conscious, especially during social situations. In some cases, there may be no known cause for this condition, which is referred to as primary or focal hyperhidrosis. This condition tends to affect both sides of the body and can occur on the hands, feet, underarms, head and face.
Causes of Hyperhidrosis
Most cases of hyperhidrosis are caused by other factors (secondary hyperhidrosis), including: Anxiety, Heart disease, Hormone changes, Blood sugar problems, Caffeine, Certain medications. In some cases, there may be no known cause for this condition, which is referred to as primary or focal hyperhidrosis. This condition tends to affect both sides of the body and can occur on the hands, feet, underarms, head and face.
Treatment for Hyperhidrosis
Treatment for hyperhidrosis depends on the severity of the condition, but may include prescription-strength antiperspirant or medication to help control sweating or stop the stimulation of the sweat glands. Botox injections in the armpits block the nerves that cause sweating and can effectively treat hyperhidrosis for up to eight months for each injection. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the nerves that control the sweat glands, or the actual glands themselves. This procedure is usually considered a last resort to be used only after conservative methods have failed. Patients who undergo surgery may develop new or even worse sweating, a condition known as compensatory sweating, later in life.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a skin condition involving a loss of melanin that occurs when the cells that produce this substance die or malfunction, resulting in increasing areas of depigmentation on the skin and hair. The specific cause of this condition is unknown, but is linked to immune system disorders, hereditary factors or single instances of emotional distress. In order to diagnose vitiligo, your doctor may perform a blood test or remove a small sample (biopsy) of affected skin in order to detect any abnormalities within the area. While there is no cure for vitiligo, there are several treatment options available to slow to progression of the condition and allow patients to once again feel confident and happy about the way they look.
Symptoms
Patients with vitiligo often experience white patches on the skin where depigmentation as occurred, as well as premature whitening of the hair (before the age of 35), change of color in the eye and loss of color on the inside of the mouth. While depigmentation can develop in nearly any area of the body, it is most common in sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, feet and arms, and is most noticeable in people with darker skin.
Treatment
Treatment for vitiligo may vary depending on the severity of the condition, and some patients may not require any treatment at all, other than protecting the skin with sunscreen and applying cosmetic camouflage cream if desired. There are several topical creams and oral medications available to restore pigment to the affected areas, while ultraviolet therapy and oral photochemotherapy may also be effective in treating patients with severe vitiligo. Surgical procedures such as skin grafts or tattooing can improve the appearance of affected skin as well. Your doctor will determine which type of treatment is most appropriate for your individual condition.
Botox
BOTOX
When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. These lines can make you look older, sad, angry or tired. BOTOX Cosmetic treatments can not only prevent you from deepening these lines during natural facial movements, they can also erase these marks of aging, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.
What can BOTOX treatments do for me?
BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the country and one of our most requested services. Quick, safe and effective, BOTOX reduces or eliminates facial lines and wrinkles for up to six months with no downtime or surgery and little to no discomfort. Through a series of tiny injections, BOTOX gives you a rejuvenated look by smoothing crow's feet beneath the eyes, frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal lines across the forehead, worry lines around the mouth, and lines on the neck. In addition to smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, BOTOX may be useful for treating migraine headaches, excessive sweating, chronic back and jaw pain, and muscle spasms.
How BOTOX Cosmetic Works
BOTOX is the brand name for botulinum toxin A, a therapeutic muscle-relaxing agent derived from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. Originally approved by the FDA for the treatment of eye and muscle spasms, BOTOX was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. Physicians have been using BOTOX Cosmetic for years as a treatment to correct visible signs of stress and aging. The medication relaxes the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles. When injected in small doses in specific areas, BOTOX injections block nerve muscles responsible for the repetitive actions that cause fine lines and wrinkles. In this way, BOTOX smoothes the lines in the skin that make you look tired or angry.
Candidates for BOTOX
A good candidate for BOTOX treatment may be anyone looking to enhance their appearance by getting rid of unwanted lines or wrinkles. It is also important that patients seeking treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic are in good physical health, are not pregnant or nursing, and do not have a neuromuscular disorder. Men and women considering BOTOX treatment should have realistic expectations of what the procedure can do. You should discuss the desired results with your doctor to ensure that your goals can be achieved.
The BOTOX Procedure
Using a very fine needle, a qualified physician will inject BOTOX Cosmetic into designated muscles in your face that are causing lines and wrinkles. You may experience brief, mild discomfort during the injection, but you can be assured that the treatment is very safe and effective. Taking only a few minutes, BOTOX treatment requires no anesthetic and recovery is immediate, allowing you to return to work and resume your normal daily activities that same day.
The Importance of Choosing a Qualified Physician
Even though BOTOX is not a surgical procedure, it is very important to choose a highly experienced and qualified physician when deciding to undergo BOTOX treatments. Doctors who are less familiar with the technique could leave you looking "frozen" or perpetually surprised. Our doctors are intimately familiar with BOTOX Cosmetic, having successfully treated hundreds of patients at our office. Not only that, we also take the time to talk with each candidate before beginning the injections to find out what he or she wants to achieve and to determine how best to correct their problem area(s), so patients can be happy again with their smoother, younger-looking faces.
BOTOX Cosmetic Results
Immediately following the BOTOX treatment, some patients may experience mild bruising, which will go away shortly. You will see your wrinkles begin to fade within 24 hours, with continued improvement over the next 5 days. The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic typically last up to four months, although many have reported results lasting up to a full year. After several BOTOX treatments, the results may be prolonged. BOTOX Cosmetic treatment will relax the muscles in your face and soften the skin, giving you a more relaxed and youthful appearance. For optimum results, many patients choose to use BOTOX in conjunction with a facelift, skin rejuvenation therapy, and/or laser skin resurfacing.
Risks and Side Effects of BOTOX
Side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are rare and are usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects caused by BOTOX are headaches and temporary redness or bruising of the skin at the site of injection. In rare cases, slight drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of expression may occur. Any risk of complication can be reduced by choosing a qualified and experienced physician.
Fillers
Restylane
Restylane® is designed to smooth wrinkles, sculpt lips and shape facial contours. It is a clear, synthetic gel made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found throughout your body. It carries little risk of allergic reaction. The most common areas for treatment are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth). With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane remains in your skin for many months.
Sculptra
Sculptra® is an injectable product that restores and corrects the signs of facial fat loss by replacing lost volume. Facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy, is the loss of fat beneath the skin, which can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. Sculptra provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. The results from Sculptra® are not immediate but they are long-lasting. In a clinical study, effects lasted for up to two years after the first treatment session in most patients. No skin testing is required.
Liquid Facelift/Fillers
Over the last few decades, the advent and growing popularity of noninvasive cosmetic procedures have encouraged further technological advances in a range of treatment modalities, including lasers, light sources, radiofrequency devices, botulinum toxins, and injectable soft tissue fillers has quickly become an alternative to invasive surgical procedures in patients both young and old. As a result, the use of dermal fillers has taken on an integral role in dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Fillers restore volume in the face, giving it a youthful fullness without surgery. Fillers plump deep and superficial lines and wrinkles. Great for nasolabial folds, cheeks bones, jawline, dark under eye circles and lips.
Radiesse
Radiesse is a synthetic injectable filler that has been FDA-approved to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles
folds and creases around the nose and mouth by augmenting the skin's natural collagen supply. It is a safe, effective and long-lasting alternative to injectable collagen and other dermal fillers for not only smoothing wrinkles but also adding volume and contour to the face for an overall younger, fuller, smoother appearance. With just one or two Radiesse® treatments, you can enjoy a beautiful, natural look that lasts.
Radiesse is composed of microspheres in a water-based gel.
The microspheres - made of a substance called calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) - stimulate the production of collagen to smooth lines and wrinkles as well as add younger-looking suppleness to the face. Radiesse® is made from minerals similar to what makes up our bones. There is no need for pre-treatment allergy testing, and it is absorbed naturally by the body over time.
Radiesse can be used on many areas of the face and body.
Numerous studies have shown Radiesse® to be especially effective for filling and correcting smile lines, nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin), and other lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It can also be used to treat depressed scars and oral commissures.
Side Effects of Radiesse
Side effects such as mild irritation, itching, swelling, discoloration or tenderness at the injection site are minimal and should fade within a few days. Results of Radiesse® Results are visible immediately after the injection and can last for up to a year or more. Touch-up treatments can prolong Radiesse's effects. Studies have shown that patients require fewer re-treatments with Radiesse® than with other leading dermal fillers.
Juvéderm
Juvederm® Injectable Gel is a smooth consistency gel capable of restoring volume to skin and smoothing away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps add volume and hydration.
What are the Benefits of Juvéderm?
Juvéderm® is a safe, effective, non-surgical option for those that want to diminish the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. It is non-animal dermal filler of smooth consistency that, unlike most hyaluronic acid fillers, which have granular consistencies, allows for easy injection and instantly natural results. Juvéderm® Ultra allows for versatility in contouring and volumizing wrinkles and folds. JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus is for correcting deeper and more severe wrinkles and folds. This allows for a completely personalized treatment tailored by your healthcare professionals to meet your needs. The results make you look naturally younger, refreshed and can last up to one year. JUVÉDERM® is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler proven safe and effective for persons of color.
Procedure & Recovery Time
Although anesthesia is not required, your doctor may use a topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the treatment area. Juvederm® Injectable Gel will be injected under your skin to add volume or fill wrinkles and folds. After the injection, your doctor may gently massage the treated areas. There is minimal recovery time with JUVÉDERM®. For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize risk of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites.
What are the results?
Most patients see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas and only need one treatment to achieve optimal results. Results may vary and touch up treatments may be required to maintain results, but JUVÉDERM® can smooth lines and wrinkles for up to a year.
Cosmetics
Lip Enhancement
Lip enhancement: Lip enhancement can be accomplished with the use of fillers to create a more defined lip border, to make lips fuller and to treat vertical lip lines.
Facial Peels
Various peels such as B-salicylic acid and other fruit acids exfoliate the top layer of skin to reduce pigmentation, leaving the skin looking refreshed. There is minimal downtime of one day. These are referred to as “lunchtime peels”.
Thermage
This is radiofrequency skin tightening. A probe is applied to the skin that applies radiofrequency heat energy to the skin which heats it, shrinking collagen fibers and damaging them. As the body repairs the damage, new collagen is produced. A moderate degree of skin tightening and contouring is achieved. This can be used on face and neck as well as on abdomen, buttocks, thighs, knees, and arms. A single treatment may be all that is required.
Sclerotherapy"Leg Veins"
Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat spider veins by injecting a solution into the veins which causes them to gradually disappear. By injecting a salt solution, known as a sclerosing solution, the lining of the veins become irritated and eventually turns into scar tissue that then fades away. This method is the preferred treatment for spider veins and has been used since the 1930s. This procedure is usually performed in your doctor's office and takes no more than an hour. Most patients need 2 to 4 treatments in order to achieve desired results. There is no downtime other than avoiding strenuous activities for the first 2 to 3 days. While sclerotherapy is proven as an effective treatment for spider veins, it is not recommended for everybody. Pregnant women and those whose saphenous vein is affected are not typically eligible for this procedure. Sclerotherapy is not effective for large varicose veins and is only recommended for smaller, superficial veins. Talk to your doctor to find out if sclerotherapy is right for you.
Neuromodulaters
examples are Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. These products prevent the muscle from moving by blocking the nerve stimulation to the muscle. They are used to treat: eleven lines between eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, crows feet, and elevate the corners of the mouth.
Complexion
Natural skin aging and sun damage causes wrinkled, sun damaged skin with brown sun spots, broken blood vessels, and redness from rosacea. In addition fine lines become more pronounced. To improve the clarity of the skin, we use various laser and light source devices. Aging also involves promience of acne scars. In addition, skin aging can also be seen on hands, chest and knees.
Intense Pulse Light Photorejuvenation
Intense Pulse Light Photorejuvenation (FotoFacial): This device, which is also noninvasive, applies high energy light similar to a laser to target blood vessels and pigmented lesions. As both melanin (pigment in our skin) and hemoglobin (in our blood vessels) absorb the light energy, they are heated and this destroys the sunspots and seals the blood vessels. A few treatments are necessary and there is slight downtime. The sunspots darken after treatment and are shed from the skin within 1-2 weeks.
Fractional Laser
Fractional Laser (like Fraxel) Reduces acne scars, softens wrinkles and smoothes skin. The best part; its safe for almost all skin tones. A laser purposely injures the skin, causing the body to produce new healthy cells, as a result of injury. Because this is a Fractional Laser, the beam is cut into tiny pieces, so it only removes between 5 and 50 percent of the skin's surface with each treatment. This makes it safe to treat all skin types. The results are permanent, although sun exposure, smoking or skipping a good skin care routine will eventually create new dark spots and wrinkles. You'll feel discomfort, but topical anesthesia and a cooling fan help mask the pain. Afterwards, you'll be red and swollen but this will disappear after a few days.
Photodynamic or blue-light therapy
Photodynamic or blue-light therapy: This treatment uses light activated chemicals to destroy pre-cancerous cells. It treats actinic keratosis, which are scaling bumps on sun exposed areas such as the face, ears, head, lips, and back of hands and forearms.
Levulan
PDT (light sensitive solution) is painted on patient’s face. After 1 hour the patient is exposed to blue light for about 15 minutes. The blue light activates the chemical solution which then destroys the rough, precancerous cells. The downtime is about 1 week and after treatment the skin looks better and smoother.
Cellulite
Beneath the skin’s surface is a layer of fat and fibrous tissue. The septa (fibrous tissues) attach the skin to underlying muscle. As fat cells protrude outward from between septa, bulges and bumps are created. The new Velashape II device combines IR (infrared light radiofrequency), massage and suction to break up the connective tissue, improve drainage and circulation, and tighten and tone the skin with no downtime. A few treatments (4-6) are required.
Laser and Photofacial Treatments
Laser Hair Removal
Whether for hygienic or cosmetic reasons, women and men who are tired of stemporary, often painful methods of removing unwanted hair on the face, back, legs or other body areas may welcome laser hair removal with relief. Lasers produce highly focused, intense beams of light. Dark pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface absorb this light and convert it to heat, destroying the follicles and preventing hair growth for up to two years. Multiple treatments are required for complete hair removal. Treatments are needle-free and do not require anesthesia. Most patients feel nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band. It is possible that some hair will grow back, though it is usually finer and lighter than what was originally removed. There may also be some redness and swelling following the procedure.
Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing, commonly called a laser peel, removes the outer, damaged layer of skin to reveal a smoother, younger look. Laser resurfacing can reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven pigmentation and superficial scarring, usually on the face. We employ both Fractional Non Ablative Skin Rejuvenation (Palomar) and Fractional CO2 Laser (Deka). A carbon dioxide (CO2) laser beam of precisely focused light vaporizes the surface skin and reveals the undamaged layer beneath. Procedure time varies depending on the size and condition of the area being treated.
DEKA Fractional Ablative Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser: Wrinkles, crepey skin texture and acne scars are impossible to eliminate with creams and products. What we find is fantastic to treat these conditions is a fractional ablative CO2 laser. Fully ablative lasers destroy the top layers of skin called epithelium and, therefore, there is longer downtime for healing. Non-ablative lasers do not destroy the top layer of skin but results are very minimal. The fractioned ablative laser creates very small microholes in the skin leaving the surrounding skin intact. There is very minimal downtime (4-5 days of crusting). This is wonderful for wrinkles on cheeks and around lips that can’t be treated with fillers alone.
Acne Scars
Ablative and Non Ablative Laser Treatment
Acne is a common condition that causes blocked pores, pimples, cysts and other lesions on the skin.
While it is most common in teenagers, acne can affect people of all ages, most often appearing on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms.
Scarring is most often caused by larger acne lesions, such as cysts or nodules, which can swell and rupture, causing a break in the wall of the individual pore.
Infected material from the inflamed lesion can spill out through this break and can affect the nearby healthy tissue, leading to the appearance of a scar. Although not harmful, most people are bothered by the unattractive appearance of these scars and seek treatment to remove or significantly reduce their appearance.
Treatment of acne scars depends on the type and severity of scarring, as well as each patient's individual skin and amount of correction desired.
Your doctor will develop a personalized treatment plan for you. For many patients, a combination of treatments may be most effective in improving the appearance of acne scars. Treating acne scars is often a complex process that involves trial and error of treatments.
We employ both Ablative CO2 and Nonablative Fractional Lasers as well as injection of fillers to treat acne scars.
The most effective way to prevent acne scars from developing is to stop the lesions that lead to scarring.
It is also important for patients to avoid picking or popping active lesions, as this can lead to infection and increase the risk of scarring. Picking at scabs should also be avoided to allow uninterrupted natural healing to occur. Sun exposure can lead to further skin damage and may delay healing of scars and lesions, and should be avoided as much as possible to maintain the health of the skin.
Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a three-step treatment used to treat mild or serious conditions of the skin through the use of a photosensitizing drug and a light source to activate it.
PDT destroys abnormal cells that cause actinic keratosis, a pre-cancerous condition, and can also minimize pores and reduce oil glands to treat acne, rosacea and some scarring as well.
During the PDT procedure, a topical photo sensitizer called Levulan is applied to the skin and left for an incubation period of several minutes to several days.
Levulan is made of aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a natural substance found in the body. After incubation, the Levulan is activated with a wavelength light source. Patients may experience sensations of warmth, tingling, heat or burning during this part of the treatment. After light activation, the treated area is washed and patients can return home, and most return to work within one to two days after the procedure.
For optimal results, patients may need up to five treatment sessions, depending on the severity of their condition and the aggressiveness of their treatment.
Sessions are spaced two to five weeks apart, and can be continued afterwards to help maintain the initial results of the treatment.
Although PDT is considered a safe treatment option, there are certain risks and side effects associated with any medical procedure.
Some of these risks and side effects may include redness, pigmentation, bruising, infection and scarring. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own within a few weeks.
Facial Fillers (Volume enhancement and treatment of folds)
These are materials injected into the face to restore volume to the cheeks and cheekbones, restore the jawline and fill hollows beneath the eyes. Fillers can bring up the corners of the mouth, treat the puppet lines around the mouth and smile lines. Fillers can be injected at both superficial and deep layers.
Hyaluronic acids
examples are Juvederm and Restylane. They can last between 6 to 18 months.
Radiesse
this filler generates new collagen where injected (calcium based microspheres).
Sculptra
this filler is used to treat generalized volume loss.
Cosmeceuticals
A smooth complexion requires the application of cosmetics, cleansers, toners, moisturizers, cell renewal products, eye creams and sunscreens. We have a complete selection of products specifically tailored to your skin type. Cosmeceuticals: Sunscreens are very important for preventing sun damage and skin aging. Other antioxidant ingredients destroy free radicals produced after skin exposure to UV radiation. Antioxidants include green tea, vitamin A, vitamin C, and coffeeberry.
Moisturizers soothe dry skin. They contain emollients, humectants, and occlusives.
Emollients promote softness. They are lipids and oils.
Humectants draw moisture from lower layers of skin and attract water from atmosphere.
Occlusives prevent evaporation of moisture.

Facials
As we age, the rate at which our skin sheds and replenishes itself slows down. This leaves a layer of dead cells on the surface of the skin, contributing to an aged appearance. Facials help exfoliate the damaged layer to reveal the younger, healthier skin beneath. Some of the ingredients used can be natural fruits and plant extracts, essential oils, vitamins, collagen and elastin. Facials reduce the signs of aging and can also improve skin conditions such as acne, dry or oily skin, and uneven texture or pigmentation. Facials are tailored to each patient for optimal results.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion improves mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems. A gentle stream of tiny particles exfoliates the outer layer of skin and provides a fresh, glowing, younger appearance. Only a small amount of skin is removed, so sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands can be treated. Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately visible. Microdermabrasion is often performed in conjunction with other skin renewal procedures, such as laser treatment and chemical peels. Multiple treatments are recommended for full effect.
Sun Kissed Glow
Full body exfoliation with application of self tanners.

If your answer is "yes," VelaShape™ may be the solution for you. VelaShape™ is a revolutionary new medical treatment for the unsightly cellulite that affects more than 80% of women over the age of 20. It's the only non-surgical device approved by the FDA for body shaping and cellulite reduction. Patients typically see a marked improvement in as few as four treatment sessions. It works on all skin types and is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of cellulite in the stomach, abdomen, love handles, upper arms, hips, thighs and buttocks. It can help you achieve the body you enjoyed before bearing children or losing weight, without undergoing surgery. The result is a smoother, more regular appearance and general reduction in the size of the treated area.
