In 2000, I visited this estate in the high desert just 60 miles inland from the Med. The region makes almost exclusively red wines. The Gil Family wanted to make a white. They planted an experimental vineyard with 30 different white varieties to see what would be best suited to their climate. We sampled these experiments and were amazed at how well Muscat adapted to the desert. 15 years later, the Gils have two large vineyards of Muscat and produce this wildly aromatic, but dry, white from a grape usually used for dessert wines. It's so much fun to see this experiment bear such wonderful fruit.

2008 Schloss Schonborn Kabinett Est. Riesling, Mosel, Germany
This off dry Riesling has several extra years of bottle age which have de-emphasized the sweetness and added fascinating layers of complexity. Principally from the famed Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Vineyard in the Mosel. The vineyards here essentially climb up slate cliffs and are among the most difficult to farm in the world of wine.

2013 Albert Bichot St Veran, Burgundy, France
CHARDONNAY!!! St Veran is one of the great value plays in White Burgundy. It is 100% Chardonnay planted in limestone soils in the Southern part of Burgundy. St Veran is next to the more famous Pouilly Fuisse but prices remain far behind its more trendy neighbor. This is a very fine example of the French Chardonnay model. It is not heavy, but crisp and refreshing with lovely fruit and minimal oak influence

2013 Cataldi Madonna Pecorino d'Abruzzo, Abruzzo, Italy
The Italians refer to Abruzzo as "Il Forno:" The Oven. This is the hot, dry Adriatic side of the central massif to the East of Rome. Luigi Cataldi Madonna is a philosophy professor and one of the most highly regarded winemakers in the region. This fascinating white wine has a wonderful top note of fresh lime that broadens and deepens to honeyed richness on the finish. A wine that starts with a high note and ends with beautiful bass.

2013 Tommasi Arthemis Fiano, Puglia, Italy
When traveling in Viareggio, a small beach town on the Tuscan coast, my wife and I came across a restaurant next to a small canal. As a fishing boat came chugging in from the sea, the owner of the restaurant came out the side door with a huge tray in hand. The boat stopped. The man filled his tray with a huge pile of fresh fish, and ran back inside. Needless to say we stopped there for lunch, a big platter of very lightly fried everything that had been on that fishing boat. The owner insisted we try a Fiano as the perfect seafood wine. Fiano simply tastes of sunshine. It is a little more full bodied than most Italian whites. Delicious.

2013 Three Brooms Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand
The Blind River subsection of Marlborough is in the Southeastern extreme of the region. It is here, the coldest part of the region, that Three Brooms is grown. This is an unusual single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from an extreme site. Tangy, zingy lemon, grapefruit, and orange flavors with only a hint of the herbaceousness that can dominate lesser New Zealand Savvies.
Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere at almost 23,000 feet. The lower reaches of the mountain on the Chilean side of the border have become one of the most compelling places in South America to grow grapes. This gorgeous, full bodied Chardonnay is fermented with wild yeasts and aged entirely in high quality French oak barrels. It competes very well with the best that California has to offer. The wine has been awarded a very high 95 point rating from wine critic James Suckling. I don't know exactly what that means, but the wine sure is tasty.
No one describes a wine better than the irrepressible Randall Graham of Bonny Doon. His thoughts on Vin Gris: "This wine is perhaps the most emblematic of the great sea change that has occurred at Bonny Doon Vineyard since the sell-off/draw-down of the Ginormous Doonamath. This wine is a true Vin Gris, which is to say, made from bespoke grapes (not a by-product of red wine production), harvested at the appropriate ripeness level for its style, and receiving but minimal skin contact. The essential principle here is that less is truly more. The wine does not overwhelm one with 'fruitybombasticity'; its charms are seductively subtle. Nose of alpine strawberry, with a beautiful crispness and a great sleek and savory texture on the palate."

Not Nouveau! This tangy red tastes like biting into a just ripe raspberry; spicy, light, and delicious. Jean Marc Burgaud owns some of the most spectacular vines in Morgon and produces some of the most sought after wines from that Beaujolias Cru, but his little Villages is a delight as well.

2013 Domaine Laporte Cabernet Franc, Loire, France
We love us some Loire valley Cabernet Franc. There is always this fascinating tension between the deep rich Cabernet fruit and Franc's tendency to green tobacco and herbal tones. Franc is used as a blender in Bordeaux to add aromatic complexity to the more stern and dense Cabernet Sauvignon. In the Loire it stands on its own. This version is an easy introduction, with great dark fruit, soft textures, and that subtle influence of the herbaceous that makes Franc unique.

2013 Honoro Vera Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain
Calatayud may be the single best place in the world to drink well for cheap cheap. It is an isolated, mountainous region between Madrid and Barcelona that is dotted with small, family owned Garnacha vineyards. These ancient stony vineyards produce wonderful Garnacha (Grenache in France, the stuff with which they make Chateauneuf) but at a fraction of the price that this quality demands elsewhere. This is one of the most delicious little wines you will ever taste for the price.

This delightful Bordeaux is a cuvee of 100% Merlot from the oldest vines on the property. It is aged in new, one, and two year old barrels. This Bordeaux is purchased direct from the Chateau. There are no brokers, negociants, or middlemen between the Estate and Pinnacle. It is the best way to find high quality Bordeaux at a very reasonable price. We love finding these little-known gems and bringing them to The Dark Room.

2013 Loring Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills, California
Brian Loring's Pinot Noirs are among the most decadent in the world. They are not for the shy, the faint of heart, or the Burgundy snob, being boisterous, packed with red and black fruits, and utterly delicious. This Santa Rita Hills bottling is a "push down wine". It contains barrels that aren't quite good enough to make the cut for his single-vineyard wines. But all the grapes for this bottling come from Cargasacchi and Clos Pepe vineyards. These two sites are among the most sought after by Pinotphiles in the Santa Rita Hills. Amazing value as this is made from grapes meant for wines at twice the price.

2012 Tommasi Ripasso, Veneto, Italy
Ripasso is a very traditional method of production in which the grape skins leftover from the making of Amarone delle Valpolicella are reused in the fermentation vats of regular Valpolicella. This infuses the less expensive Valpo with some of the richness, exotic spice, and dark chocolate pruney goodness of Amarone. Tommasi's blend of roughly 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Corvinone is a fascinating interplay of brisk acids and red fruits combined with the brooding warmth of the Amarone style.

The Benegas Estate stands on the site of that original planting and even includes some of the original own rooted Cabernet Franc vines. This Estate Cabernet is a very powerful, full bodied Cab with firm tannins and a rich oaky top note.

Cava is usually the best way to drink methode champenoise style bubbles for every day dollars. This is a smaller producer growing grapes on the steep slopes above the valley where the big boys churn out millions of cases of Codorniu and Freixenet. The lower yielding hillside sites give this wine more body and richness than one usually finds in inexpensive Cava.
