About Us
Superior Liquor opened in June, 2000. The store is locally owned and operated and only has the one store in Superior. 20,000 Square feet of product meets customers as they enter the store. Product selection is huge, prices are low and the staff friendly and helpful.
General Manager
A Boulder resident for over 50 years, Pete Messimer is proud to offer Superior Liquor to his home town! After ten years with a major winery, four years with a brewery and three years with a Colorado beer wholesaler, opening Superior Liquor represented the opportunity to get off the road and enjoy the neighborhood. His effort to combine the best of everything he's seen, in all the markets he has traveled to, is best judged by you. He encourages you to say hi when you are in the store and make any suggestions you can think of to improve your shopping experience.
Store Manager
Kim Littlejohn, also known as the Liquor Department Manager. A "Jill" of most all trades! Born in Ft. Collins, moving to Boulder in her Junior High years (not Middle School--so now you can guess her age!) makes her one of the few Colorado natives. Kim has 3 sons, 2 daughters-in-law and 4 PERFECT grandchildren all living very close. She loves spending free time with all of them. Kim also loves traveling with her best friend (sister). Managing liquor stores in the Boulder area for over 15 years gives her a unique perspective on consumer needs. Let Kim help you pick out that perfect bourbon or local micro!
Customer Service Manager
Fresh off eighteen years in the beer business, Kathy Sugarmann has taken the reigns at the front of the store. Whether it's putting together large corporate orders, or simply directing customers to the beer, wine and liquor departments, Kathy is at ease.
Weekend Manager - Tina
Night Manager-Tina "Fey" fills in the gaps at the Customer Service Counter. But is generally the one in charge! Tina is focused on her studies (with a 4.0), but makes ends meet with time at Superior Liquor. Petite but powerful, Tina handles situations with a smile, poise & an occasional bit of muscle. She's a joy to work with & quick to help you plan your party or find your favorite wine.

elio grasso is one of the greatest producers in monforte, arguably the greatest commune in barolo. while their barolos are stunning, they need time, and while we wait for them to mature, we can drink this lovely little dolcetto, which might be one of the most food friendly wines around. electric garnet purple in color, with a delightful savory, grapey aroma, this wine is a study in balance and precision, while still having a deliciously round and easy to like personality. strawberry, ripe plum, and black tea feature on the nose and in the mouth, with a charmingly supple, yet rustically tinged palate. this wine is hard to put down, and its gulpable personality will be the glue that ties all the flavors of thanksgiving together marvelously. sure pinot noir is great for turkey day, but try a little slice of the old world, and see why dolcetto is one of the hidden gems of the wine world.

Montepeloso
A Quo Toscana Rosso 2011
fabio chiarelotto has created one of tuscany's great estates at montepeloso, above the town of suvareto in maremma along the tuscan coast. a quo is his entry level wine, and man is it sexy. the blend of sangiovese, montepulciano, marselan and alicante bouschet yields a wine with a deep, dark core of black fruit and a bright, fresh, lifted framework. it is delightfully floral and finishes with baking spice and silky texture. throughout it all runs that intangible tuscan elegance that elevates it from a tasty beverage to a delightful dinner companion. this week it's all about the thanksgiving table, and this is a great choice for those who like fuller-bodied wines. it has plenty of stuffing, but is still lithe and lively enough to pair well with the more delicate items on the menu.

Stolpman Vineyards
Viognier Ballard Canyon 2013
tom stolpman was the first to plant vines in ballard canyon, and began advocating for a separate ava designation the area over twenty years ago. his son peter took the reins when tom retired in 2009, and he would see the ballard canyon ava created in 2013. this year's bottlings are the first to carry the ballard canyon designation. this limestone dominated spot in santa barbara county is planted to 80% rhone varietals. the brilliant sashi moorman is stolpman's winemaker, and he fermented and aged this viognier in tank to keep it bright and fresh. it exudes tropical fruit and exotic spice and floral aromatics, but remains racy and refreshing. this is the perfect chardonnay alternative, and its opulent tangerine, stone fruit and jasmine character will enhance everything involved in a traditional thanksgiving feast.

Our Wine Staff
Wine Department Manager
Chris Lamson has worked in the wine industry in Colorado for nearly twenty years. After college his BS in Biology seemed more about BS than Biology, so he started looking for another career path. His wanderings took him to golf courses, national parks, photo labs and mortgage companies before he landed at a wine wholesaler and found his calling. He has lived and sold wine in Denver, Telluride, and Boulder, on both the wholesale and retail levels. His fascination with wine has led him to travel extensively. He has spent time in vineyards in California, Oregon, Washington, France, Spain, Italy and Argentina. When he isn't at the store, he will usually be found flyfishing the local streams, hiking with his wife Carla, or remodeling some part of his house.
Wine Manager
Matej Dolenc grew up in the Washington DC area, with a seven year stint in Slovenia (then part of the former Yugoslavia). After graduating with High Distinction in Political Science from the University of Illinois, he thought it better to go on Phish tour than to go to graduate school. After several years of hedonistic wandering he needed a job, and seeing as he had developed an interest in wine it seemed logical to get a job in a liquor store. On his first day he got to taste wines with a Frenchman and have a glass of Flora Springs Merlot with a steak dinner. Now here he is, more than ten years later, still hanging out, tasting and buying wine, both for the store and himself. It seems that wine and music, and the traveling associated with it occupy most of his time and income.
Superior Liquor opened in June, 2000. The store is locally owned and operated and only has the one store in Superior. 20,000 Square feet of product meets customers as they enter the store. Product selection is huge, prices are low and the staff friendly and helpful.
