Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue is a specific type of massage aimed at the fascia and deeper muscle tissues of the body. It helps relieve severe tension and to treat certain muscular skeletal disorders. These massage sessions can be quite intense as a result of deliberate and focused work on a specific area. Clients often ask for deep tissue massage thinking they are just getting a massage with deeper pressure. Deep tissue works on breaking down adhesions caused by injury or chronic muscle tension. It helps to relieve pain, increases mobility, injury recovery, postural issues, fibromyalgia and general muscle tension or spasm. The work can be uncomfortable at times but the therapist should always work within your pain threshold.
Ashiatsu Deepfeet Bar Therapy
Ashiatsu Deepfeet Bar Therapy aka Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is a deep compression barefoot massage where the therapist utilizes parallel bars on the ceiling for support and balance. This massage is like no other deep tissue massage you have ever experienced! Using gravity and their body weight the therapist is able to deliver a consistently deep pressure massage with the feet. The broader surface of the foot makes the compression smooth and sumptuous not bony or pokey like using an elbow, thumb or knuckles. If you love deep work but have difficulty finding a therapist to deliver, then Ashiatsu may be perfect for you! Its great for those who suffer from chronic conditions such as back/hip pain, shoulder pain, or scoliosis. It's also extremely beneficial for crossfitters, runners, cyclists and all types of athletes looking for treatment and prevention of injuries, increased range of motion, fast recovery and long lasting results.
Travell Trigger Point Therapy
Janet Travell developed Trigger Point Therapy and was John F. Kennedy's personal physician. She was a pioneer in the research and treatment of myofascial pain. Her clinical research has shown that trigger points (TPs) are often responsible for headaches, muscle weakness and pain, restricted movement and even dizziness. She defined an active myofascial trigger point as an area of hypersensitivity found in an abnormally tighten band of muscle. When pressed, it causes a referred pain and other sensations to other parts of the body. Muscles may develop TPs following an acute trauma, chilling or chronic overload. Travell and other researchers have compiled maps of the most common TPs and the areas to which they refer pain. These trigger points are inactivated by "stretch and spray", procaine injection, ultrasound, deep finger pressure or a properly applied massage. When the involved TP's are located and inactivated, the pain often disappears immediately. The first three methods can only be performed under the supervision of a doctor or physical therapist but effective treatment can also be peformed by massage therapists clinically trained according to the protocol outlined in Travell Trigger Point Manuals.
Pregnancy Massage/Prenatal Massage
Pregnancy massage is massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother's needs. It utilizes a comfortable, secure side laying position to avoid undue pressure on a growing abdomen and the lower back. The mother's body is comfortably supported by pillows and bolsters. Therapists specifically trained in Prenatal massage have specific knowledge of the precautions/ contraindications and understand all stages of pregnancy. In addition to pain relief and emotional support, it helps increase circulation and flow of nutrients to the placenta, aids postural realignment, provides relief to joints, help relieve back pain and fatigue and reduce swelling/edema. Pregnancy massage is also beneficial to postpartum in that it aids in the process of the uterus returning to its normal size, releases shoulder, neck and arm tension from care and feeding of infant.
Hot Stones Massage
Hot stones massage is a type of massage where the therapist uses various sized smooth, heated stones during a massage. The direct heat and weight of the stone soothes and relaxes tight muscles and allows the therapist to work deeper, more quickly. The hot stones can be used as an extension of their hands or by placing them on the body while they massage other parts of the body. Combining hot stones with a full body massage brings a deeper state of relaxation to the session. The heated stones expand blood vessels, thereby increasing blood flow, helps release toxins, increase range of motion, and relieve trigger points which cause pain.

Deep bodywork that brings ease
Why consider Rolfing Structural Integration? Rolfing SI is a deep form of bodywork that reorganizes the fascia, a type of connective tissue. Fascia permeates the entire body like a body suit and its role is to support and differentiate muscle tissue, bones, internal organs and nerves. When we are injured, hurt, or develop bad postural habits, adhesions are formed and it ultimately affects the body's overall efficiency. Movement is then restricted or limited, and pain or dysfunction develops. Imagine driving your car and you hit a pothole. After driving around with the tires in misalignment and out of balance can lead to uneven tire tread and fuel inefficiency. The little boy symbol to the right represents the misalignment of the body over time and how Rolfing reorganizes and restructures the body around "the line of the spine". A restacking of the blocks to create balance. One of the main goals of Rolfing SI is to free adhesions and realign the fascia so that movement is less restricted and the body is operating more efficiently. With ease.
A Pioneer
Dr. Ida P. Rolf (1896-1979) developed the theory and practice of Rolfing out a quest for alternative solutions to personal and family health issues. The limitations of modern medicine and her desire for more, lead her to explore manipulation and other forms of alternative healing such as yoga, osteopathy, chiropractic and Alexander techniques. Using her combined knowledge of science, a PhD in biochemistry, scientific work in organic chemistry and alternative therapies, she developed a system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education that we now call Rolfing. In 1971 she founded the Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Today it is the main headquaters and the only school in the US that certifies Rolfers and promotes research and public education about Rolfing, fascia and soft tissue manipulation. There are additional international offices in Europe, Brazil, Canada and Japan.
Rolfing SI versus Massage
Rolfing may seem similar to massage in several ways but its different in the goals and results. Usually oils or lotions are used in massage but little to no lubrication is used in Rolfing. Both Massage Therapy and Rolfing can be used to loosen tight muscles, reduce stress, treat injuries and provide relaxation, but only Rolfing can bring about balance and realign the body for long term results. Rolfing sessions are also different than massage in that the client participates in the sessions with movement and/or breathing instead of just relaxing on the table. This process creates ownership and empowerment for clients to take control over their physical and mental health. During a Rolfing SI session the client usually wears their underwear: 2 piece bathing suit for women, briefs, not boxers, for men or any type of comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict movement and yet allows work on upper legs, hips and midback.
The Ten-Series
Rolfing is most effective when done in the Ten-series or the "recipe". The goal of these 10 sessions is to systematically balance the structure and function of the entire body by freeing restrictions/adhesions with deep pressure, breath work and sometimes movement. Each Rolfing session has a functional goal, focuses on a targeted area and/or regions of the body and works toward establishing more efficient relationships within the body and the between the body and its environment. By addressing the body in this systematic manner, the body is balanced within gravity from top to bottom, side to side, front to back, and inside to outside. The frequency of the Rolfing ten sessions can range from one per week to every three weeks depending on the individual and their needs. Once the Ten-series is complete you may never feel the need to get another Rolfing session or you may choose to come back for "tune ups" to address more specific goals.
