Monroe's combines classical and creative Italian cuisine, a sophisticated selection of wines, and a comfortable and friendly atmosphere to create a special dining experience in the heart
of Alexandria's vibrant Del Ray neighborhood. Born and raised in Alexandria, Mark Abraham has long appreciated his native Del Ray neighborhood. He remembers visiting the Monroe’s location as a child, back when it was the local pharmacy and convenience store. After getting married, Mark returned to Del Ray with his wife Laura, and Laura – naturally – fell in love with the neighborhood. They moved into a house around the corner on Monroe Ave. The restaurant business runs in Mark’s blood – for more than 40 years his parents owned and operated the legendary Vienna Inn in Vienna, Virginia. When the Monroe’s space became available in 1996, the Abrahams were able to combine two longtime passions – restaurants and Del Ray. Mark and Laura's daughter, Mary, decided that she too wanted to be in the restaurant business in Del Ray, and in February 2005 opened Del Merei Grille on Mount Vernon Avenue. Monroe's is a family-run business, and any given night you will be greeted by a family member at the door.
