They easily transition for indoor display in cooler rooms with adequate light. Uses: Planters, beds and borders, window boxes. Did you know? Ranunculus flowers can be cut for indoor enjoyment. Although generally treated as an annual, Ranunculus can be considered a perennial if you dig up the tubers in late summer. If you elect to treat it as a perennial, read on. Choose a location that offers a rich, humus soil that is slight acidic and well-drained. (Heavy soils should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting.) Norfolk Island Pine
Latin name: Araucaria heterophylla. Category: Houseplant. Hardiness Zones: 10-11 (not hardy on Long Island year-round). Norfolk Island pine is an exotic conifer native to Norfolk Island in the southern Pacific Ocean. Hardy in the United States to zones 10-11 (think Miami); NIP is cold sensitive to temperatures lower than 40 F. Indoor daytime temperatures should be in the 60-70 degree F range; somewhat cooler at night. On Long Island, it is grown as an indoor plant except during the summer months. Norfolk Island pine grows best in very bright light areas in the home. You’ll know if it’s not receiving enough light; the plant’s branches will droop. For best results, keep the soil barely moist. (Do not let excess water to collect in the pot’s saucer.) If and when you repot, use a potting soil that drains readily. If you want to spoil your NIP, provide ample humidity. Trees & Shrubs
Coral Bark Japanese Maple
Latin name: Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’. Category: Deciduous Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-8. The ever-popular Coral Bark Maple, ‘Sango Kaku’, has bright salmon coral colored bark in winter. The foliage is lime green in spring that darkens as summer temperatures warm; fall color is yellow or yellow mixed with orange. It is very important to site this tree properly, the more sun in winter the better the bark color. Some afternoon summer shade will keep the foliage attractive. Can be transplanted – either balled and burlapped or as a container plant. Clay soils (heavy soils that are typically found on the North Shore) should be amended with organic matter – compost or composted manure prior to planting to improve poor drainage. Apply 1” of water per week; remember to factor in any rainfall. Then, allow the soil to begin to dry slightly between waterings. Shallow-rooted, Japanese maples prefer a light covering (1-2”) of an organic mulch to protect the roots. Do not mulch around the trunk of the plant. Did you know? Best used as a single specimen tree in the garden or landscape; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 15-18’. WIDTH - 8-10’. LIGHT - part sun to dappled shade but also does well in full sun. WATER - Moist, well-drained soil.
Dogwood
Latin name: Cornus florida ‘Rubra’. Category: Deciduous Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-9. This elegant pink dogwood starts blooming when only 4-6' tall. Produces masses of deep pink flowers even before the leaves appear (late April); holds color for 3 or 4 weeks. Bears shiny red berries in late summer that make a tasty snack for visiting songbirds. Crimson fall color. A water ring, sometimes called a water well, is a mound of soil that is built around the circumference of a planting hole once a plant has been installed. The water ring helps to direct water to the outer edges of a planting hole, encouraging new roots to grow outward, in search of moisture. Moist and well drained means exactly what it sounds like – soil is moist without being soggy. Most plants like about 1” of water per week. Amend soil with compost or composted manure prior to planting. Established plants can benefit from fertilization. Fertilizers that are high in nitrogen (N) will promote green leafy growth. Excess nitrogen in the soil can cause excessive vegetative growth at the expense of flower bud development. It is best to avoid fertilizing late in the growing season. Applications made at that time can force lush, vegetative growth that will not have a chance to harden off before the onset of cold weather. Fertilizer should be applied in early spring or Thanksgiving. Did you know? This dogwood grows well even in the shade of larger trees. Best used as specimen flowering tree; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 20’-30’. WIDTH - 20’-25’. LIGHT - Full sun to part sun. WATER - Prefers moist, well-drained soil.
Japanese Cedar
Latin name: Cryptomeria japonica ‘Yoshino’. Category: Evergreen Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-9. Crytopmeria provides a tall, dense, evergreen screen, or can be used as a graceful specimen for the landscape. Provides textural and color contrast to the landscape. The summer needle color is glistening blue-green; growth rate is fast. Established plants can benefit from fertilization. Fertilizers that are high in N, nitrogen, will promote green leafy growth. Excess nitrogen in the soil can cause excessive vegetative growth on plants at the expense of flower bud development. It is best to avoid fertilizing late in the growing season. Applications made at that time can force lush, vegetative growth that will not have a chance to harden off before the onset of cold weather. Apply fertilizer in early spring or Thanksgiving. A water ring, sometimes called a water well, is a mound of compacted soil that is built around the circumference of a planting hole once a plant has been installed. The water ring helps to direct water to the outer edges of a planting hole, encouraging new roots to grow outward, in search of moisture. Moist and well drained means exactly as it sounds – soil is moist without being soggy. Most plants like about 1 inch of water per week. Amend soil with compost or composted manure prior to planting. Did you know? Cryptomeria is an excellent plant for screening/privacy. Provides a shade-tolerant screening alternative to ‘Leyland’ cypress in the landscape; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 25’-30’. WIDTH - 6’-10’. SPACING - Plant 6’-7’ from center to center. LIGHT - Full sun to part sun. WATER - Prefers moist, well-drained soil.
Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple
Latin name: Acer palmatum ‘Mikawa Yatsubusa’. Category: Deciduous Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-8. The very best of the upright dwarfs. In spring, emerging leaves are pale green and layered one on top of another; glorious red fall leaf color. Very slow growing with sturdy upright structure. Best used as a single specimen tree in the garden or landscape; or in a container for continuous seasonal changes; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 3’. WIDTH - 4’. LIGHT - Part sun to dappled shade. WATER - Moist, well-drained soil.
Oshio Beni Japanese Maple
Latin name: Acer palmatum ‘Oshio Beni’. Category: Deciduous Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-8. Oshio Beni is a favorite upright tree among Japanese maple enthusiasts. Spring color is red with a hint of orange but quickly matures to a deep purple. It holds its color through the growing season with hints of a little green by the end of summer. Leaves turn striking red in fall and hold that color until they drop. Best used as a single specimen tree in the garden or landscape; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 12-15’. WIDTH - 10-12’. LIGHT - Part sun to dappled shade; fairly sun tolerant. WATER - Moist, well-drained soil.
Samaritan Chinese Dogwood
Latin name: Cornus kousa ‘Samaritan’. Category: Deciduous Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-8. ‘Samaritan’ is truly a beautiful specimen tree with showy green and white variegated leaves. Showy bracts (flowers) in early summer give way to red fruit in fall. Be sure to plant ‘Samaritan’ in well-drained, acidic soils and provide adequate moisture. Did you know? ‘Samaritan’ is best used as a specimen flowering tree; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 20’. WIDTH - 15’-20’. LIGHT - Full sun to part sun. WATER - Prefers moist, well-drained soil.
Viridis Japanese Maple
Latin name: Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Viridis’. Category: Deciduous Tree. Hardiness zones: Zones 5-8. ‘Viridis’ is a beautiful green lace-leaf Japanese maple forming a mounding shape. Gardeners often plant this cultivar as a compliment to the red-leaved ‘Crimson Queen’ cultivar. Fall coloration is golden-yellow with tints of red. Best used as a single specimen tree in the garden or landscape; Additional Information: HEIGHT - 10’. WIDTH - 10’. LIGHT - part sun to dappled shade but also does well in full sun. WATER - Moist, well-drained soil.

Pineapple Sage
Latin name: Salvia splendens. Category: Herb. Why pineapple sage as a common name? You’ll understand once you crush a leaf between your finger tips and enjoy the wonderful aroma of ripe pineapple. PS is ideal for full sun locations and well-drained soils; plant or pot in the garden or containers. Info
All signs are printed on Genesis Husk paper
located in Tray 2 of both HP 8500 and HP 4550N printers
All Outdoor Signage is created without the thick green border
(because they go in sign holders that have borders the fall around the sign), use "Outdoor Template" - whatever size needed. Cut the paper sign along the crop marks, then laminate. Cut the laminated border to be 0.25 inch on all sides
All Indoor Signage is created with a thick green border
(because they are placed in sign holders that simply hold them up, so the border needs to be created on the actual sign), use "Indoor Template" - whatever size needed. Cut the paper sign along the green border, then laminate. Cut the laminated sign tightly along the sign, but be sure to leave it sealed
Greenhouse has its own template.
"8V-GHS Template" The printed sign will be 7x9 - cut along the crop marks. Laminate, then cut a 0.5 inch border on all sides
See enclosed signage samples
for each department's respective signs and guidelines for font sizes used
Always use Avant Garde as the font for signage, but when using "$" - be sure to make it Arial.
All Herbal Poetry Signs should be cut along crop marks, and laminated
with a 0.25 border on sides and top, and a 5.25 inch border along the bottom (will be inserted behind Herb signage and will fit so it shows in full above it)
