Annealing
simple advice for thorough Annealing.
Different colors have different Ideal° annealing temperatures.
Generally, opals tend to anneal best several degrees lower than transparents, and hot colors (reds & oranges) are best annealed lower than opals. Most all of System 96 glasses have ideal annealing temperatures between 965°F (518C) and 940°F (504C).
Annealing will still occur if you hold 20-39° Above or below the ideal temperature; it just takes more time.
The further away you are fmm the Ideal' temperature, the longer takes to get a good anneal. If you hold at a temperature which is oo far away from the ideal anneal temperature (say, 40° or more) you may newer sufficiently relieve the internal stresses. It is also important to ramp slowly down from the anneal point to the strain point. If the temperature thmughout the project is not very similar, hi5 possible to create permanent stress.
To assure a good anneal
we recommend holding at 950°F (510C), then slowly ramp down (around 150° per hour) to 800°F (427C) Holding time and ramp speed depend on how big and thick your project is. Refer to Firing Schedules for guidelines.
Bubble squeeze
guidelines for controlling Bubbles.
Bubble squeeze
If you're seeking to reduce or eliminate bubbles, try slowing the rate of heating in Segment #2 (Heating II). Inserting a half-hour soak at around 1220° F (660°C) may also help, allowing added time for air to escape from between glass pieces before the edges seal and trap it in the form of bubdes. For large projects, experiment with eramp squeeze; a very slow ramp to tack temperatures, say 60° per hour from 1100-1300°F (590-704°C). If your project has a dear base, consider using our Toude Thick' clear instead of hvo layers of regular clear. You can't trap air where there isn't a space.
About Us
This year LightGarden Glass Art celebrates its 30th year in business.
Some of our clients include Gary Smith Custom Cabinets, Pacific Rogue Cabinets, and Zion Lutheran Church here in Medford.
In addition to the many custom glass panels we have done for homes around the Rogue Valley
we designed a pool table size lamp for the set of "Monday Night Live", on WTLV in Jacksonville, Florida, and completed a 27" diameter stage blasted glass carving, based on the words and lyrics of singer, song writer and author Jimmy Buffett for the Margaritaville Cafe in Key West, Florida.
In 2003, Jessy's fused glass dragonfly and frog jewelry was featured in the publication "Stained Glass: Exploring New Techniques and New Materials" by Rockport Press.
Jessy also designed the panel "Tree of Life" for Asante's Spaces of the Heart on display in the Voorhie's Mansion at Eden Valley Orchards. This panel depicts the heritage of Southern Oregon's pear industry and the current transition to include vineyards.
Jessy served as a founding board member of the International Guild of Glass Artists
and worked as the editor for the first nine issues of their quarterly magazine, Common Ground: Glass.
Stackers!
Here's a really fun way to create new decorations for your fused glass work.
All you need is a little scrap glass and your imagination.
Pick some of your favorite colors and stack them in three to four layers piles on shelf paper in your kiln.
I used some noodles as well as scrap glass. Fire to a tack fuse.
Using mosaic pliers, nip your strips into colorful chunks.
You can fill up casting pods to create shapes like the hearts & stars below, fuse to your base glass as they are, or full fire them into interesting shapes that can be used in fused or mosaic pieces.
Discover the amazing world of glass art at LightGarden. We feature classes and supplies in stained glass, fusing and mosaics. We also carry a large inventory of cabinet glass.
