The Furniture Mart started in 1946 by Benny Gavronsky. He was a survivor of the Holocaust who came over after the war and started this business with the shirt off his back. He was 4 foot 11 and sold new and used furniture and appliances. In those days fridges weren’t as big as they are now, but the man could literally carry a refrigerator on his back.
They way that Furniture Mart grew was when they developed a price structure to compete with not the local merchants, but with the furniture that was being sold in Highpoint, North Carolina. Furniture Mart wanted to get that furniture sold right here in Jacksonville, so they offered customers the same prices.
