Digital Printing makes the most sense for short-to medium runs of high-quality labels. There are no plates, thus no plate charges. Pricing and turnaround are both optimum at quantities up to 50,000 labels. Turnaround can be in as little as one day. Many industries such as Specialty Food, Wine and Beverage, Health and Beauty, Nutraceutical and more seek digital printing for these reasons plus the capability of the Indigo to vary information by label. You can change graphics, bar code, text, part number and addresses on the fly with the Indigo press. Do you have several different products? You can change the product name, photo, bar code, and product number easily, affordably and get your labels quickly. The bottom line is Fernqvist’s digital press can get your products to the marketplace weeks faster, targeted specifically to your market and beautifully printed.
SeaYu's
SeaYu's daring marketing shift. SeaYu® Enterprises had a great product - an all natural, highly-effective, all-purpose odor eliminator perfect for the pet, home and automotive markets. Initial customer research told them that a single, multi-purpose product would be well received by the retailer and consumer. In reality, however, buyer behavior from the larger chain stores - all the way down to the smaller specialty stores - and consumers told them a different story. Rather than a general purpose product, buyers preferred to buy products that addressed specific odor problems over an all purpose product. SeaYu created 15 unique odor elimination and cleaner products, each targeted to a specific audience and specific uses - such as a dog owner with a skunked dog or a cat owner with a litter box odor problem.
Greek Mama
Greek Mama meets marketplace in brilliant color. As do many specialty food companies, Greek Mama uses small plastic containers as seen in the deli section of food stores. The label is the element that distingishes the product. In essence, the label is the advertising. It jumps out at the customer saying, "buy me, buy me." And eye-popping color (as well as the delicious taste) is the reason these products are getting the attention they receive. To date, Fernqvist has printed a dozen different 3.5-inch circular lid labels - each varying in color and label ingredients. Coupled with the assortment of rectangular wrap-around band labels (also in different colors) it was cost-effective and Fernqvist more than met the needed turnaround.
Sun-Ni Cheese
Sun-Ni Cheese reaps benefit with change from flexo to digital printing. Sun-Ni Cheese, a family owned and run manufacturing facility in Broomall, has been awarded the “Best of Philadelphia” recognition for their hummus. As a long time customer of Fernqvist, their signature labels were produced using flexography on synthetic material with 4-color process plus a spot color to maintain consistent color of large background areas. With the purchase of the Indigo press - and in keeping with Fernqvist’s forward thinking paradigm of sharing any opportunity to suggest a “better way” - Fernqvist approached Sun-Ni Cheese with the prospect of producing their labels digitally. The higher resolution capabilities of this press removed the spot color requirement. In addition, a laminate was added for extra durability. Because no plates were required, shorter low-quantity runs of labels now made economical sense. This allowed for additional flavors or new products to be tested on the market in small quantities. It is only fitting that the “ Best of Philadelphia” hummus should have the “Best of Fernqvist” label.
Witch Creek Winery
Witch Creek Winery uniquely named wines, avant garde labels. Dave Wodehouse is a man with a story to tell and he lets his wine and labels do the talking. The winery is named for Witch Creek, which runs near a vineyard east of Ramona, in San Diego County. On some special bottlings, Dave uses a humorous variation of a cat, which according to legend, is a witch’s closest companion. Fernqvist and Witch Creek Winery have had a business relationship for years as Dave purchased the LX810 color label printer to make small runs of private labels. With the LX810 Witch Creek was on their way to making custom labels for their wines. The LX810 worked fantastic for the smaller quantities of 50, 100 and even 200 but soon, as the grapes in the vineyard grew, so did the orders and Dave’s imagination.
Organic Essence
Organic Essence labels shine. Organic Essence had an established product line and a label look-and-feel that was quite distictive and recognizable. The challenge presented to Fernqvist was to maintain the look but offer a more cost-effective production than hot stamping in metallic gold, silver, bronze, or other colored foils. Fernqvist took advantage of the Indigo press’s exacting registration. Printing on silver foil with an undercoat of white in specific areas and none in other areas, Fernqvist was able to create a full range of metallic colors using four-color digital printing. The resulting high quality label cost much less than the metallic foil stamping process.
Herbal Pride
Herbal pride beats the regulation game through digital printing. In the nutraceutical (nutritional supplement) industry, new rules and regulations force the expense of reprinting labels often! This constant change of legal requirements undermines the process of printing labels - again and again - through offset printing. Herbal Pride, a startup company, has used digitally printed high-quality labels from its inception. The digital workflow allows shorter time to market because changes and edits can be made quickly and easily. BONUS: With the Ferqvist Indigo press, an actual press sample can be sent for approval, quaranteeing that Herbal Pride’s expections are met when final labels ship!

Label Artwork (Preparing / Sending Artwork)
Information for preparing and sending artwork for label printing. That State Before Printing.
What exactly is prepress?
Prepress is the term used in the printing industry for the processes and procedures that occur between the procurement of original artwork and placing the art on the printing press. The following items are considered part of prepress: typesetting, copyediting, page layout, trapping (also referred to as spreading and choking), separation (specifying images or text to be put on plates applying individual printing mediums [inks, varnishes, etc.] to a common print) and platemaking (photomechanical exposure and processing of light-sensitive emulsion on a printing plate). As you can imagine, prepress takes time. To help us get your labels to you faster there are a few things you can do to aid us.
FTP
If your files are too big to email to us you can upload them to our FTP server rather than sending them on CD. Our FTP service is www.ibackup.com. The user name for our customers is fernqvist2 and the password for our customers is labels2. Once you have uploaded your art files please email or call (800-426-8215) us so we know to look for them.
Outlined Fonts
If you are creating your artwork in Adobe Illustrator (which we prefer over artwork created by other software) please make sure to outline your fonts. To do this, first Select All then choose Outline Fonts from the type menu. It would also be helpful of you to send a non-outlined version of the file as well in case you later want us to make any changes to the text.
CMYK vs Pantone
All digital labels are done in CMYK. However, if you are ordering flexographic labels we have the option of printing in either CMYK or Pantone inks. CMYK will allow us to create full color jobs with only 4 inks. However, if your job uses only 1-3 colors there is a cost advantage to using Pantone colors. There is also an advantage to using a Pantone ink in addition to CMYK when you have a large solid area of a specific color or a color that's hard to mix out of CMYK such as oranges or purples (imagine mixing paints back in grade school - some colors always come out muddy no matter what you try). We cannot print your job until you tell us which Pantone inks to use. You can pick up a swatch book (we use the Solid Coated type) at an art supply store or at your request we can recommend some colors for you and send swatches with your proof.
Hotstamp & Emboss
Minimum stroke size- .3pt. Minimum font size- 7pt. Set up areas to be embossed and/or hotstamped, as a seperate layer in Illustrator or as a defined Spot Color in the Swatches palette.
Bleed
If your label has art all the way to the edge (colored backgrounds or borders) we need you to add bleed. Bleed should be at least 1/16th of an inch beyond the edge of the label so that when we cut it out there are no inkless gaps at the edges.
File Type
It’s important that you send us a file that we can work with the first time. Adobe Illustrator .ai or .eps is ideal, Adobe Photoshop .pdf or Adobe InDesign .indd files will also usually work. As long as you do not want us to make any changes to the artwork (text, color, etc), you have allowed enough space for bleed, the file is high enough resolution (300 dpi at the actual size of the printed label), and your job is CMYK we may be able to work with a .jpg file but a .jpg should be a last resort.
Font Size
One of the advantages of digital labels is that words can be printed very small. However, if you are ordering flexographic labels you lose that advantage. For flexographic labels, please make sure that your fonts are at least 7pt and that any fine lines are at least 0.5pts wide. If you require smaller text or finer lines consider having your labels printed on our HP Indigo digital press.
Print Position
The last thing we need to know before we can manufacture your labels is your print position - which way do you want the labels to come off the roll. Here’s a chart to help you indicate to us which direction you would like.
Hot Stamping / Embossing
Great label finishing techniques!
Standing out on the shelf
Fernqvist now offers Hot Stamping and Embossing to accent your digital labels and draw more attention to your products.
The Process
Hot Stamping is a fusion of heat, pressure, a metal plate, and foil to create reflective and eye catching portions of a label design. This is an inkless and dry process. Foils used can be in a variety of colors. Embossing is using a metal plate to raise a design and/or image on a label. It creates a three dimensional look. This gives a label more depth to its design.
