New Haven has a wealth of activities (both indoor and outdoor) to keep you busy, in shape and, sadly, prone to injury if you're not careful! Whether you're a professional athlete, a Zumba-goer, a Crossfit junkie or a weekend warrior, sports massage therapy is an excellent complement to your workout regimen. Sports massage therapy is geared toward to the specific areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements. Sports massage promotes flexibility, reduces fatigue, improves endurance, decreases muscle soreness, helps prevent injuries and prepares your body AND mind for optimal performance. So, how often should you get a Sports Massage? Depending on your exercise routine, we'll help you create a plan that will work with your schedule, budget and level of activity.

Medical Massage
60 minutes $80, 90 minutes $120. Many people think that massage is just for relaxation, but it's so much more than that. The health benefits of massage therapy are seemingly endless, but the big one, STRESS, affects the body in ways that we're only beginning to understand. Since stress can translate in different ways for different people - from aches and pains to muscle tension to both physical and emotional exhaustion, massage can actually help your body and mind de-stress, providing relief for some of these ailments. And when your ailments extend beyond stress-induced, our therapists are trained to meet those needs as well. If you have a specific goal, such as symptomatic relief from a health-related condition, we can work with you to determine whether or not massage can be an effective part of your treatment plan. Treatment methods and goals may change. We will re-evaluate your personalized treatment plan as your state of health changes. We may find that with time, fewer sessions are needed and/or different methods need to be used. Please note that there is no additional charge for Medical Massage.
TMJ
Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, a condition commonly referred to as TMJ syndrome or TMJ, is marked by pain and stiffness in the jaw, face, and neck. TMJ affects the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jaw to the side of your skull. By using massage on the muscles surrounding the temporomandibular joint - both inside and outside the mouth - TMJ patients may be able to lessen pain and ease TMJ symptoms.
Migraines
Migraine headaches can cause severe, debilitating pain. They can come on suddenly and may last a few hours or a few days. In severe cases they can impact your quality of life and ability to function normally. When your neck and shoulder muscles become tight, this can lead to a migraine outbreak. Massage therapy offers a way to help relax these muscles. Deep-tissue massage focuses on the layers of muscles deep under the skin. According to the National Institute of Massotherapy, going for regular massage therapy can help your body relax, which can help relieve spasms and tightness that cause pain and lead to migraines. Massage can also stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural pain relievers found in the body.
Cancer
Studies of massage for cancer patients suggest massage can decrease stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and fatigue. Many health care professionals recognize massage as a useful, noninvasive addition to standard medical treatment. Many people find that massage brings a temporary feeling of well-being and relaxation. Proponents claim massage can reduce 95% of all muscle-related pain and, in some cases, can take the place of pain-relieving drugs. They say the techniques used relax muscles and improve muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination; relieve pain; reduce the need for pain medications; increase blood circulation; and improve stamina and sleep patterns.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common and often persistent injury afflicting runners, walkers and hikers, and nearly anyone who stands for a living - cashiers, for instance. It causes mainly foot arch pain and/or heel pain. Morning foot pain is a signature symptom. Plantar fasciitis is not the same thing as heel spurs and flat feet, but they are related and often confused.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is associated with widespread chronic pain, fatigue, memory problems and mood changes. It is not a disease, but rather a syndrome that can be managed. Depending on your sensitivity levels and tender points, we concentrate on massage techniques that encourage circulation in the muscles, which increases the flow of nutrients and eliminates waste products. This is particularly beneficial for those with fibromyalgia as it can reduce heart rate, relax muscles, improve range of motion in joints and increase production of the body's natural painkillers.
Swedish Massage
60 minutes $80. 90 minutes $120.
Are you new to massage or just in the mood to lie on the table and let someone gently rub away the stresses of your week?
Then Swedish massage might be for you.
Based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology, Swedish massage promotes relaxation and has many other health benefits.
The session is performed by trained, licensed massage therapists and can be slow and gentle or brisk and stimulating, depending on what you'd like to achieve that day. And remember, every day is different and, as a result so is every massage.
Swedish massage is the most commonly known massage here in the United States.
During the massage, the therapist lubricates the skin with oil or cream and performs massage strokes to warm up the muscle tissue and release tension, eventually helping to break up "knots" or adhered tissues, called adhesions.
Before the massage, your Elm City Wellness therapist will ask you if you have any injuries or conditions.
This is important information for us, as it helps us tailor your session specifically for your needs. Please be sure to tell us about areas of tightness or pain, allergies and conditions like pregnancy. You can also tell us whether you prefer light or firm pressure - and also communicate that during the session if you'd like!
Our therapist will then give you instructions on how to lie on the table
supine (face up) or prone (face down), and under the blankets. You will get undressed to your level of comfort, but you are generally nude or wearing underpants during the massage. The therapist uncovers only the part of the body he/she is working on (the technique is called draping). If you are uncomfortable being nude, you may keep as much clothing on as you'd like! The therapist will leave the room while you get undressed and on the table and will knock before entering.
Every therapist has a different style and techniques.
You can ask our therapist to spend more time on certain areas or just request a full-body massage. If our therapist finds an area that is particularly tight, he/she may focus there for a bit, releasing the muscle tension.
But if you want deeper work and can tolerate more pressure or brief discomfort to get relief from muscle pain
you may want to book a Deep Tissue Massage, which is another form of Swedish massage.
Deep Tissue Massage
Did You Know? According to the August 2005 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs. Deep tissue massage also received a top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. People often notice improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is a type of Swedish massage but has a different focus. It helps to realign the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue (called fascia) that have stuck together to form "knots" while increasing your overall flexibility and restoring range of motion and normal movement. This type of work is particularly helpful if you have a chronically tight or stiff neck, low back pain or shoulder pain. Deep tissue strokes are much slower and the pressure is firmer, allowing our therapists to concentrate specifically on areas of tension and pain. But is the work painful? While it might be uncomfortable at times, it shouldn't "hurt".
60 Minutes$80.00
90 Minutes$120.00
Sweet Pain vs. Sour Pain
The term "hurts so good" is what many massage therapists and their clients use to differentiate between the discomfort of Deep Tissue massage and pain that is outside of your comfort range. Muscles have grains or fibers (like a piece of wood) and while traditional Swedish massage uses lighter strokes that flow with the grains of the muscles, Deep Tissue massage strokes usually go against the grain to loosen the tissue and release toxins that were trapped in the adhesions. There may be some stiffness or soreness after a Deep Tissue massage, but it should subside within a few days. So, if it's going to hurt, why do it? Well, unlike Swedish massage (used mainly for relaxation), Deep Tissue massage therapy focuses on specific problems, including:
Chronic pain, including shoulder pain, back pain, etc.
Recovery from injuries, including whiplash, sports injuries, etc.
Repetitive strain injuries, including:
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Medial epicodylitis (golfer's elbow)
Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
Thoracic outlet sydrome
Postural problems
Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Lupus and much more
Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage is a form of massage therapy that follows the same principles of a Swedish massage but with the addition of heated stones, allowing the therapist greater access to deeper muscles. Our therapists at Elm City Wellness use the stones as an extension of our own hands. We also place them throughout your body on your back, in your hands, between your toes, etc. to help you sink into a greater state of relaxation and allow us to quickly warm up tight muscles so we can access those deeper layers where shoulder pain and back pain typically originate. If you're worried about the discomfort you might feel during a Deep Tissue Massage, hot stones might be the choice for you. The penetrating effects of the heated stones allow us to deliver a massage without the excessive pressure. The stones are particularly effective if you have fibromyalgia, suffer from painful menstrual cramps or are rehabilitating a sports injury or over-use injury.

Massage for Children
Massage is a wonderful stress-buster for children. Oftentimes when we think about stress, we think of it as an adult condition. But young infants and children are also prone to stress. A young child starting school could experience stress. Family illness or financial problems, divorce and even vacations can produce emotional strain. One of the benefits of massage therapy is a reduction in stress and stress hormone levels. If it's the child's first massage, they may squirm a bit because they are not familiar with this type of touch. Due to the discomfort and pain of medical procedures inflicted on them, infants and especially premature babies may have developed a negative association with touch. Given this new, positive experience they relax and their bodies quiet down. Parents are welcome to stay in the treatment room during the sessions. Additional Children's Sessions $60.

Acupuncture
60 minutes $90, 90 minutes $120 (Intro Session).
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning by inserting needles at very precise acupuncture points to cure disease or alleviate pain.
Because acupuncture is an entire system of medicine and not just one specialty, it can conceivably be used to treat any disease or disorder. It is one of the most widely recognized and successful methods of alternative treatment in the world. Its effectiveness in treating a wide variety of disorders has been clinically proven. Not only is it safe, but it does not cause any of the toxic side effects that might be associated with ingesting many pharmaceuticals.
The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy (called meridians) run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface.
An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.
The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams
and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles
spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.
The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
Some conditions effectively treated with acupuncture
low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, tennis elbow, knee pain, periarthritis of the shoulder, sprains, facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders), headache, dental pain, tempromandibular (TMJ) dysfunction, rheumatoid arthritis, induction of labor, correction of malposition of fetus (breech presentation), morning sickness, nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain, stroke, essential hypertension, primary hypotension, renal colic, leucopenia, adverse reactions to radiation or chemotherapy, allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, biliary colic, depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke), acute bacillary dysentery, primary dysmenorrhea, acute epigastralgia, peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis. .. and many other conditions as well.
Reiki
Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by the therapist laying his or her hands on the body to improve the "life force energy" that flows through us. Many people believe that if your "life force energy" is low, then you are more likely to get sick or feel stress. If it is high, you are more capable of being happy and healthy. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual components that help relax and bring about feelings of peace, security and well-being. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve yourself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, clients must accept responsibility for their healing and take an active part in it. You must also include an active commitment to improve yourself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

Maya Abdominal Massage
Cost: $145 for initial 2-hour session / $125 follow-up sessions (90 minutes). Lindsey Eggebrecht, LMT, applies a multi-system approach (anatomy and physiology, lymph, circulatory, etc.) using the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy. She also offers herbal and nutritional support, along with spiritual and emotional support. Lindsey is passionate about the care of self and believes it is essential to caring for others. Her hope is to share her work with those in need so they might find healing in their own two hands and discover the knowledge and power that has always been with them.
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy are founded on the ancient Mayan technique of abdominal massage which is an external non invasive manipulation that repositions internal organs that have shifted, thereby restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve and chi.
Based on over thirty years of training and experience in massage
naprapathy, herbology, and spiritual healing, Dr. Rosita Arvigo developed these techniques which now bear her name. This modality incorporates a holistic approach to health care which includes massage, anatomy and physiology, herbology, nutrition, and emotional and spiritual healing. Dr. Arvigo believes that with any natural healing technique, these areas must be simultaneously addressed to promote optimal health.
Dr. Arvigo learned these techniques from her mentor
Don Elijio Panti, the great Maya Shaman of Belize, Central America with whom she apprenticed for ten years. Don Elijio believed that a woman's center is her uterus. "If a woman's uterus is out of balance, so is she," he would say. Midwives and healers of Central America agree that most female troubles are caused by the wandering womb. Don Elijio passed away in 1996 at the age of 103. Rosita also studied with Hortence Robinson, a 73 year old herbal midwife of Belize who has been delivering babies since she was 13.
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy address position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs.
The work is best known for the correction of the prolapsed, fallen, or tilted uterus and for the prevention and treatment of benign prostate enlargement in men, and for relief of many common digestive disorders.
Benefits for Women
Normally the uterus leans slightly over the bladder in the center of the pelvis, about one and a half inches above the pubic bone. It is held in this position by muscles, the vaginal wall and ligaments that attach it to the back, front, and sides of the pelvis. Uterine ligaments are made to stretch to accommodate a growing fetus inside and to move freely when the bladder or bowel is full. The ligaments and muscles can weaken and loosen, causing the uterus to fall downward, forward, backward or to either side. A uterus in any of these positions is called tilted or prolapsed. Modern medicine has little or nothing to offer women with this problem. Options may include using the birth control pill, muscle relaxants, or surgery and women are generally told, "your uterus is tipped, but that is normal and don't worry about it." Yet women have a laundry list of physical and emotional symptoms that can be addressed and prevented with these simple, noninvasive massage techniques. When reproductive organs shift, they can constrict normal flow of blood and lymph, and disrupt nerve connections. Just a few extra ounces sitting on blood and lymph vessels can cause havoc throughout the different systems in the body. By shifting the uterus back into place, homeostasis, or the natural balance of the body, is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. This is essential for healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and cesarean delivery are diminished when addressed by uterine massage. In addition, digestion, urinary and bladder problems can be helped.
Benefits for Men
Men benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Massage techniques as well. By ensuring a full blood supply to the prostate, the abdominal massage helps to prevent swelling and inflammation. Men report that they can feel a distinct difference in blood flow after a treatment. Not only does the massage relieve prostate swelling, but it helps alleviate varicose veins, premature ejaculation, some impotency problems and the need to urinate frequently.
Digestive and Emotional Benefits for Men and Women
Individuals with digestive disorders benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Massage. Many of our common disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Indigestion, Constipation, and heartburn are treated with antacids, muscle relaxants, and a variety of other medications. These treatments address symptoms, not the causes. By using the techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage, the upper abdomen is also given a deep, thorough massage to loosen the tight muscles around the stomach and the arteries that feed the digestive and eliminative organs with their vital blood supply. The diaphragm is gently massaged allowing relaxation of tight musculature.
