I was so used to feeling out of control and hopeless and boy does that do a number on your self-esteem! But now, I'm happier, my confidence level has increased, and I hold my head a little higher. Boy, oh boy, I wasn't sure how to form the words for a recommendation for BodyByJuana, but here I go. I started working out with Juana in April of 2012 because I wanted to feel & look gorgeous on my wedding day (May of 2013). I have struggled with my weight since I was 9 & have always been an "emotional" eater, which is ironic because my weight constantly depressed me. (See the vicious cycle??). Well, deep breath, at my peak I was 320 pounds of unhappiness and self disgust. My first session with Juana, I was actually dry-heaving doing sprints and could barely do a sit-up. She encouraged me to fight through it & I did. The first month I made a little progress on the scale, but could tell the improvement was starting because I could use the stairs without getting winded & I slept better at night. Juana & I discussed my eating, when I was eating, what I was eating, & I made changes to that because as she said "channel that elsewhere". I did...to my workouts. Now...here we are...it's September 9th...I am down from that 320 by SIXTY ONE POUNDS. I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I went for years trying every fad diet out on the market which only caused my weight to go up and down so many times however it seemed to always go up more than down. I reached a point where I was looking into the mirror and didn't know the woman in my reflection. She was a stranger who was very sad, had no energy and a very low opinion of herself. My name is Juana Williams and I am a fitness fanatic, wife, mother of 4 & studio owner!
My mission in life is to, "Combat Obesity and Health Related Disease/Disorders through Faith & Fitness". I have spent the past 20+ years in Corporate America managing both large & small groups. I have obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management-summa cum laude and an Associate's Degree in Business with Honors. I also hold several certifications including but not limited to, Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, Boot Camp Fitness Instructor, Kettlebell, Tabata, H.I.I.T., Zumba and more! I have always had a passion for fitness and have been blessed to live my dream as a motivator, mentor and leader in the fitness industry. Breakfast Muffins
3/4 pound of turkey or chicken breakfast sausage
1/8 cup minced onion
1/8 cup minced green bell pepper
3 whites and 2 eggs, beaten
3 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk
1/4 cup shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese
Optional 1/4 cup of minced apple
Directions
Season with sage, black or white pepper, a dash of sea salt and garlic.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
In a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, combine sausage, onion and green pepper
Cook until sausage is evenly brown. Drain, crumble, and set aside.
Evenly distribute sausage mixture between the cups. Mix together the eggs and milk, and divide between the cups
Sprinkle tops with shredded cheese.
Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until filling is set
Tasty Italian Chicken Breast
1 tablespoon dried parsley, divided
1 tablespoon dried basil, divided
1 tablespoon dried oregano, divided
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tomatoes, sliced
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray
Sprinkle 1 teaspoon parsley and 1 teaspoon basil evenly over the bottom of the baking dish
Arrange chicken breast halves in the dish, and sprinkle evenly with garlic slices. In a small bowl, mix the remaining 2 teaspoons parsley, remaining 2 teaspoons basil, salt, pepper, oregano and red pepper; sprinkle over the chicken. Top with tomato slices.
Bake covered in the preheated oven 25 minutes
Remove cover, and continue baking 15 minutes, or until chicken juices run clear.
Appetizer / Cucumber Cups
1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 tablespoon nonfat or 1% milk
4 scallions sliced
4 ounces thinly sliced smoked salmon
1/4 cup whipped cream cheese
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Freshly ground white pepper
2 large English cucumbers
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
Directions
Process the cottage cheese and milk in a food processor until smooth
Add the scallions, salmon, cream cheese, lemon juice and a pinch of white pepper and process until smooth and creamy. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.
Cut the cucumbers into 3/4-inch-thick rounds, discarding the ends
Using a small spoon, scoop the seeds and some of the flesh out of each round to form a small cup. Fill each cup with about 2 teaspoons of the salmon whip and sprinkle with the chives. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 1 hour.
Dinner / Mediterranean Couscous and Shrimp
1 Cup of Mediterranean Couscous
1/4 cup or raisins
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup of Honey Greek yogurt
2 tablespoons chopped mint
1/2 teaspoon of Sea Salt
1 1/2 pounds medium shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails removed
1 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 cup of Juice of a lemon
Directions
Preheat the broiler to high. Combine the couscous, raisins and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a bowl
Add 1 1/4 cups very hot water, cover and let sit until all of the water is absorbed and the couscous is tender, approx5 minutes.
Stir together the yogurt, mint and 1 to 2 tablespoons water in another bowl
Season with salt and set aside. Toss the shrimp, tomatoes, the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and paprika together. Spread out on a baking sheet and broil until the shrimp is opaque and cooked through, about 4 minutes. Drizzle with the lemon juice. Fluff the couscous and divide the shrimp and couscous among 4 plates. Scrape any of the drippings from the baking sheet into the yogurt-hummus sauce. Serve the shrimp and couscous with the sauce.
Dessert / Grilled Fruit with a Honey Yogurt Sauce
Choose some of your favorite fruit and slice
I prefer pineapples/plums & peaches.
1-1/2 cups of plain Greek Yogurt
2 tablespoons of Honey
1/2 of a lemon
Directions
Heat a grill pan until completely hot
Place fruit on grill cooking both sides until fruit is caramelized
Remove the fruit from the grill and place on dessert plates
Stir together the yogurt, honey and the juice of 1/2 a lemon
Top the caramelized fruit with yogurt and enjoy!
Lemon Salmon Burgers
Makes: 1.
(16 ounce) can salmon, drained and flaked
2 egg whites
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons finely chopped green & red peppers
1/4 cup whole wheat seasoned dry bread crumbs
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1 pinch red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of greek yougurt dip
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 pinch dried basil
Directions
Nutritional Information Amount Per Serving Calories: 192, Total Fat: 9.7g, Cholesterol: 103mg.
In a medium bowl, mix together the salmon, egg whites, parsley, onion, whole wheat breadcrumbs, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon of basil, and red pepper flakes
Form into 6 firmly packed patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat
Spray with non stick spray, add the patties, and cook for 4 minutes per side, or until nicely browned.
In a small bowl, mix together the greek yogurt dip, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and a pinch of basil
Use as a sauce for your patties.
Grilled Chicken Burgers
Makes: 8 servings. Ingredients:
1 onion, chopped
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 cup fresh sliced mushrooms
1 tomato, seeded and chopped
2 carrots, chopped
2 pounds ground chicken
1/4 cup fresh whole wheat bread crumbs
1 tablespoon Mrs. Dash Hamburger Seasoning
A dash of Sea Salt for taste
Black Pepper for taste
Directions
Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat and lightly oil grate
Lightly spray a saute pan with cooking or oil spray over medium heat
Saute the onion with the garlic first, then the bell pepper, then the mushrooms, tomatoes and carrots, all to desired tenderness. Set aside and allow all vegetables to cool completely.
In a large bowl, combine the chicken and vegetables
Add bread crumbs and seasonings to taste. Mix all together well and form into 8 patties.
Grill over medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes per side, or to desired doneness
Lentils & Veggie Soup
Serves 6, Cook Time 8 hours. Ingredients:
2 cups sweet potatoes, quartered
2 cups carrots
2 1/2 cups green lentils (cooked)
2 bell peppers
1 cup of mushrooms
2 onions
6 garlic cloves
2 cups of cherry tomatoes
6 cups reduced sodium organic chicken broth
1 tbsp. Italian seasoning
2-3 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
Directions
Place potatoes, carrots, lentils, peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic, tomatoes and broth in slow cooker
Cook on high for 1 hour, add Italian seasoning
Reduce heat to low and cook 7 hours
Turn off heat, season with lemon juice
Very Veggie Burgers
Serves 4, Prep time: 30 minutes. Ingredients:
1/2 tbsp. unsalted butter or EVOO cooking spray
1 1/2 cup copped onions
2 cups of mushrooms
1 can of black beans (drained & rinsed)
1/2 cup bell peppers
2 cloves of garlic
1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
2 tbsp. sweet chili sauce
3/4 cup of whole wheat bread crumbs
1/4 cup of almond milk (to bind)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F
Heat butter in large skillet over medium heat, add mushrooms and 1 cup of onion
Cook 15-20 minutes until brown & caramelized.
Mash beans w fork in mixing bowl until pasty
Finely chop peppers, garlic and 1/2 cup onion and mix into mashed beans
Mix milk, salt, chili sauce and bread crumbs into bean mixture until it binds
Add a bit more bread crumb if needed. (Make 4 patties)
Bake patties on baking sheets in oven for 8 minutes on each side or until firm
Fitness Tips
The plank exercise is highly ranked and is a great way to build endurance in both the abs and back, as well as the stabilizer muscles. This move is also great for building strength for pushups, an exercise that requires quite a bit of core strength. How to:
Lie face down on mat resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor.
Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows.
Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels.
Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your rear end from sticking up in the air or sagging in the middle.
Hold for 20 to 60 seconds, lower and repeat for 3-5 reps.
Burpee
To perform a standard burpee, begin in a standing position.
From there, bend your legs to a squatting position and place your hands beside your feet, shoulder width apart. Thrust both your feet out behind you and land in the push-up position so that your body is straight, your arms are straight and your core is tight. Jump your feet back to your hands, then straighten your body, finishing with an upright jump. That is a single repetition of a burpee.
Burpees Exercises
A Full Body Exercise To Lose Fat. The burpees exercise is a simple exercise that only requires your body and nothing else. There is no need to use equipment, yet it gives you cardio and strength training benefits like very few other exercises can. Here you will find a sample workout using burpees. Note: the movement should be done without stopping and each repetition is performed non-stop, moving from one repetition to the next. In order to do a burpee you have to follow this sequence:
Begin in a shoulder wide stance
Quickly move in to a squat and crouching position with your hands on the floor
Kick your feet back in to a push up position and perform a push up
Bring your legs in together at the same time back in to the crouching position
Explode up and jump as high as you can (similar to a bodyweight jump squat)
Land in the same shoulder wide stance.
This completes one repetition
Other Exercises
Concentrated Bicep curl
Have a seat on a workout bench or chair. Separate your legs equal length apart. Grab a dumbbell (any size that suits you), and then lower your arm about 3/4 of the way down. DO NOT HYPER EXTEND YOUR ARM! pull your arm back up slowly but in good form, do not sacrifice form...this can cause injury to your elbow and possibly your muscle. This is a fantastic exercise to build your bicep muscles.
Superman
The Superman exercise allows the strengthening of all back muscles, legs, glutes arms and abdominals. This exercise coordinates the muscles to work together and helps target specific muscle groups that may be weak.
Pull Over
Sculpt sexy arms (back, shoulders, and abs too) with these 5 jiggle-proofing moves. Pullover Targets: Shoulders, upper back, triceps, abs, and butt.
Lunge Press
Targets: Shoulders, arms, abs, oblique's, butt, and legs. Stand with feet hip - width apart, holding medicine ball with both hands in front of chest, elbows bent by sides. Lunge back with right leg and rotate torso to right, then back to center.
Reverse Dunk Targets: Triceps and abs
Lie face up on floor with knees bent, heels on floor, holding medicine ball with both hands in front of chest, elbows bent by sides. Slowly sit up, keeping abs engaged.
